We all leave things behind when we die (no matter how much Swedish Death Cleaning we do!)—tangible things like our possessions, family members, pets, and intangible memories, accomplishments, the sorrow of our loved ones. In this new body of work, I explore ways of honoring and speaking with those who have died through the medium of what is left behind. In this work, art becomes a vehicle for transforming objects of everyday life into sacred creations that honor and celebrate the ancestors, those who made our lives possible.

Mining the flotsam of my families’ lives, from t-shirts, ties and gloves to photos and slides, I create objects that invoke the presence of those who have passed. These personal grief objects and the items used in them are specific to my family, yet also ask the viewer to consider their own relationship to their ancestors, as well as all the things, tangible and intangible, that we will all eventually leave behind.
